We held our annual Country Fair where hundreds of residents and volunteers enjoyed corn dogs, cotton candy, carnival games, ice cream, root beer floats, and exotic animals provided by the "Silly Safari" group. When was the last time you saw or got to pet a large owl, a couple of snakes, a lizard, or even a skunk? That's what our folks did on campus.

Another day, residents and staff learned more about the world and our country's problem of Human Trafficking and modern day slavery, through a presentation by an Indiana organization called "Purchased". A hard subject to hear and think about - but a reality and our people want to stay informed and do something about injustices in our community, our country, and the world. FUMC is partnering with Purchased for a "United for One" fun run and walk on October 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Our campus will take on the atmosphere of a "street fair" and have fun things to do, along with helping to raise awareness for this problem that continues to grow in today's society. Please join us!

The next day, we enjoyed a reception for two or our cottage home residents, Jess Shively and Betty Blakely, who have volunteered at the Johnson Memorial Health for over 18 years! They were honored by Indiana's Lieutenant Governor as recipients of the Golden Hoosier Award, the highest honor the State of Indiana gives to seniors for their service to the Community.

We capped off the week with having an old fashion "Corn Roast" where we grilled out 500 ears of corn and had a social to eat and visit with others on our campus where more than 550 call home.

Sound like a "nursing home"? I don't think so! Come visit and see for yourself!!
It is my belief as the CEO that we can always do a better job. If I evaluate a staff member on communication, I'd give them at most a 9 out of 10 - because we all have room to improve, myself included.

So when I see words that are strong and defining, such as "exceptional", I appreciate the picture they paint and the service they portray.

For instance, a thank you note we received today reads as follows:

To the Franklin United Methodist Community,

Your lovely gift of flowers for my mother's memorial service was very much appreciated. FUMC itself was a wonderful gift to my parents during their last 15 years of life. Your care and thoughtfulness has always been exceptional.

Warmly,
The Community is full of anticipation as residents, families, and our staff are a buzz with hope, joy, and excitement.

It's the time of many Christmas parties, receptions, music events, holiday lighting excursions, gift exchanges, carolers in our hallways and more.

As I write these words, several of our staff are lined up outside my office door. No, not to see me or because they are in trouble, but to visit the Mutual Bank branch located next to my office.

You see, in the last few hours our residents have presented each of our employees a Christmas Gift - a significant check to thank them for all they do during the year and wish them a "very Merry Christmas!" These residents whom we love have turned the tables and showed us their love!!

Since September, they have been raising funds quietly and have now presented all of our hourly employees with a nice Christmas gift. Can you imagine handwriting over 400 checks and stuffing them in envelopes?

I'm sure that this weekend many of these employees will be buying gifts for their kids, stocking up on groceries for a Christmas feast, and even sharing some of their cashed check with the red kettles outside the doors when they hear the bell ring.

God is so good and we are blessed at this time of year to share with you our joy, and thanksgiving for being a part of this wonderful Community of friends and neighbors. Merry Christmas!Franklin United Methodist Communityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16022225704531167816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493653895196817701.post-16097381676353080822014-08-19T05:25:00.000-07:002014-08-19T05:28:14.143-07:00Activities Make the Difference! The picture below is a former medicine cart that has now been transformed into a special purpose
activities cart. Filled to the brim with craft items and other things to be used by our Activities professionals, this cart is just one of three that goes throughout our facility to engage residents.

Activities can make all the difference in keeping folks involved, stimulated, and to their highest practical level of physical and mental health. It's just one of the ways that we live out our mission to "give folks the very best day of their lives-today!" Even if it is only for an afternoon or morning, a lunch time or a 30 minute activity, or perhaps just a ten minute stroll around the rose garden, let's make it a great day!

We are proud of the caring and creative members of our Activities Department, which now numbers seven staff members who work day, evening, and weekend shifts.

What does that mean? Recently, five local teenagers left for a sunny day of fun in the sun and near the water, as they travelled a few miles away to the Blue River in Edinburg. Their day of being around the water ended tragically, as one young lady was swept over a dam in the rain swollen river and the hero boys attempted to save her. At the end of the week following, she remained critically injured and two young men were lost. Many of our young staff members and FUMC family were touched by the losses through connections at school, work, church, or just as community neighbors.

FUMC held a special Prayer Service for these five young people and their families. Staff have worn blue ribbons for weeks, remembering the tragedy. And the picture below shows the five cards, one for each family that were filled with handwritten notes by our many FUMC staff, often sprinkled with tears.
Many of these fathers who joined us and others who were celebrating their own dads, came from our independent cottage homes, apartments, health center, special care dementia areas, and even those here for just a short term "Rehab to Home".

The men enjoyed a great breakfast and as our host stated, it was a "heart attack" breakfast with bacon and sausage and gravy and more. Our own Medical Director, Dr. Mike Welsh, was not only in attendance but serving coffee and juice to our guests. We asked him to "just turn a blind eye" to our menu!

So what finishes off a great breakfast with good fellowship and fabulous music entertainment that came all the way from New York to perform? Why Cherry Pie of course! Now that's a man's breakfast. But my only question was - where's the ice cream!!

We salute all the dads of our Community and remember the legacy of those who have gone before us.Franklin United Methodist Communityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16022225704531167816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493653895196817701.post-29084730649327948662014-04-11T10:20:00.001-07:002014-04-11T10:20:28.984-07:00REHAB RESULTSRehabilitation Therapy can be some pain! But, perhaps you've heard "no pain - no gain!"

Recently I reviewed the surveys taken by many of our Rehab patients following the completion of their treatment and their return back home. In every category of the survey, former Rehab guests (patients) ranked FUMC Rehab in the "EXCELLENT" category.

A few of the comments were:

I thoroughly enjoyed each visit/ tough but good!'

I feel as if we became family through my experience here in therapy.

Therapists showed concern and compassion.

I highly recommend this facility to everyone! My knee surgery went very well due to the
program here at FUMC. I do truly hate to leave! If I ever needed therapy again,
 I would certainly come back!!!

If you or a loved one reside in Central Indiana and you need a place for outstanding rehabilitation services (Medicare certified), whether planned for a surgery or due to an emergency, we hope you will consider allowing us the privilege of serving you. We are open to all persons, regardless of their church affiliation, and would be happy to help you return to your former well-being and lifestyle.
Many of our residents who are used to getting outside for walks on our campus or taking a joy ride on one of our buses to see the neighborhoods and towns have gotten "cabin fever" during this tough winter weather.

The good news is they didn't have to shovel snow, worry about frozen pipes, stand in line for bread and milk in the store before another winter storm hit, concern themselves with the propane shortage, their garage door wouldn't go up, or a host of other problems the rest of us Hoosiers encountered in the last 31 days!

I am proud to report that our staff made it in every day, our facilities held up to the challenges, and residents were transported to medical providers as needed. Many mornings as we fought the elements to get here, it was reassuring to go pass one of our 15 dining rooms and see that our residents were enjoying a nice hot breakfast in the comfort of their home, right on time!! Franklin United Methodist Community offers our residents so much more than many senior living or long-term care facilities. Oftentimes, at other places, if a resident needs to see the a doctor or go the the hospital, family are required to take their loved one. At FUMC, we are proud that we have several vehicles and drivers that take our folks to medical appointments when needed. We just added this "gently used" wheelchair van/bus which accommodates 12 persons in seats and two wheelchairs. Some of our residents will tell you that they so enjoy our "Joy Rides" where we take them on an hour-long journey to a "mystery destination". It is a nice change of pace for folks who seldom get to take a drive like they used to with their spouse or family.
Franklin United Methodist Communityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16022225704531167816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493653895196817701.post-70010315026097694472013-10-16T10:36:00.000-07:002013-10-16T10:36:10.056-07:00So Why Would I Move Now?Oftentimes healthy and active persons, say 62 to 75 years old ask, why would I move to a retirement community campus now? I don't need any help!"

Here's a letter I received today from one of our independent home residents who are "active" on our campus and throughout the community.

Yesterday . . . I parked across from our entrance . . . and my wife was getting out of the car when she slipped (on the wet) grass and fell. Before I even knew what was happening one of our FUMC buses stopped and two of our staff rushed to the scene. The ladies were seeing that she was getting the necessary help. As I crossed the street a tractor stopped and there was a third employee to help as needed.

She was not seriously hurt and was able to go on about her business. We both are grateful for the kind and prompt attention of our staff.

None of us know if or when we may need assistance. Wouldn't it be great to be surrounded by neighbors (and staff) who watch out for one another and are quick to respond to our "surprises" in life.

The joy of socialization and interaction amongst our residents is what adds the spice to life for many in this chapter of their lives.

At our Labor Day Celebration and Corn Roast (sweet corn in Indiana at the end of August!) several of our ladies entertained us with their dance and ribbon routines. Both the line dancers and the "Ribbonettes" meet regularly in our Group Exercise Room of our Wellness Center for exercise. So, we invited them to show off their routines and enjoy the applause from a captive audience.
Another Gator (John Deere that is) came to the Franklin United Methodist Community today thanks to the gift of some special residents on our campus. Our Grounds staff uses theses John Deere units to maintain the lovely grounds and yards of nearly 300 residents in our 197 independent homes. We are proud to be a not-for-profit, faith-based community, where neighbors assist one another.Franklin United Methodist Communityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16022225704531167816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493653895196817701.post-36052748772739554862013-08-15T05:27:00.000-07:002013-08-15T05:27:19.410-07:00The Mail Keeps Coming . . .Today we received yet another handwritten thank you from a family as their loved one moves through the "continuum" of care. That means, mom has been independent in an apartment, then needed some assistance, spent time in a special "mild" dementia unit, and is now moving to our highest level of care and assistance as her disease progresses.

Her daughter writes on behalf of her and her siblings the following: I (We) have been extremely pleased with her care in the Murphy Center . . . the nurses, aides, activity persons, facilities' staff, and social workers have been A+. Franklin United Methodist Community has always been "right on top" in how our parents have received the care they've needed over the years. Thank you, thank you, with warmest regards.

What a pleasure it has been to serve these special seniors and their immediate family. We salute this remarkable family for the loving support and care they have provided their mom and dad through visits, phone calls, cards, and bringing the grandchildren over the years. They have given their parents many "very good days!"Franklin United Methodist Communityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16022225704531167816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493653895196817701.post-37853098800891984742013-08-13T11:15:00.001-07:002013-08-13T11:15:35.768-07:00Noteworthy!We receive many notes from residents, Rehab guests, and their families. Most are very "noteworthy" and filled with appreciation for services we have provided. Here's what Mrs. F.R. said today in her note:

"Thanks . . . being with folks like you I didn't feel alone when I came (to visit). I knew I would get hugs and smiles. My sister had the best of care . . . and you did things you didn't have to do for her. You felt like my family".

In our orientation classes for new staff we encourage them to treat our residents and guests like their own family-Grandpa or Grandma. Sounds like it is working! Send us your notes and let us know how we are doing for you and your family.
Volunteers who reside outside the retirement community put on the event with the assistance of our FUMC Chaplains, and began on Thursday night and concluded on Sunday. A well-coordinated activity led by teams from the Emmaus Walk and alumni who supported our residents, it was reported that more than 90 persons from throughout Indiana attended some of the memorable events.

This may well become a model for other Communities to use and we are most grateful for the opportunity for our residents to growth spiritually. It once again demonstrates our mission at FUMC of "providing a retirement experience filled with well-being and wholeness". Perhaps you know someone who would like to join our Community for their personal growth and adventure with other like minded older adults.Franklin United Methodist Communityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16022225704531167816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493653895196817701.post-839576598371237802013-08-06T06:15:00.000-07:002013-08-06T06:15:08.651-07:00Picture Update - Babies! My last blog of July 31st told about our "Baby Days" that our Activities Department hosts to help our residents enjoy seeing babies and small children. Here's a couple of pictures that will help you see why the residents love to "make faces and giggle" when these little ones visit.

We offer a wonderful opportunity for persons of all ages who would like to volunteer their time in connecting with our residents. Perhaps you could visit someone, deliver some mail, read the newspaper, share a song, push a wheelchair, bring in your dog, play the piano, serve root beer floats, and more? Why not invest in making a difference in some one's life?
Just last Sunday our Pastor introduced us to his first grandchild, a 6-day old baby boy. After church, a crowd surrounded the new parents and baby. Proud Grandpa had to stand at a distance and watch the flurry of activity.

Yesterday, we had "Baby Day" on our Advanced Special Care, where we offer help and hope for those most severely affected by Alzheimer's and dementia. The 29 residents enjoyed three little girls whose parents brought them to meet the residents and entertain them on the floor-crawling, trying to walk, playing with toys and more. Two 9-month olds and a one year old baby, brought the residents to life as the residents clapped for them, touched their hands, wiggled their feet and made funny faces trying to get each baby to react.

What a thrill to watch the interaction spanning some 80 or more years between God's children. No matter the memory loss or condition, these babies bring a smile to the residents and their faces reflect that "this is a good day!" It's just one example of what makes us different - as we carry out our not-for-profit, faith based ministry.
As we prepare to celebrate our freedom on the 4th of July, our dietary staff prepares for our Annual Parade held this afternoon. The old fashion ice cream cart pedaled by friendly staff member, Hayli, will be in our parade with the Mayor and other celebrities, surrounded by fire trucks, police motorcycles, convertibles, vintage cars, golf carts, and bicycles.

Residents and guests will be lining the Methodist Drive which surrounds our campus cheering and waving flags. And of course, enjoying the ice cream distributed from the cart above! Have a great July 4th and remember to thanks all those who made our freedom possible. We salute our veterans!

With the suggestion of a resident, we have considered a proposal to develop a forestry project of hardwood trees to be planted in the area for the environmental benefit of our residents, staff, and neighbors for the decades to come.

A donation has been made to cover the purchase of the first 3,000 native Indiana hard-wood varieties of trees, which will be planted by volunteers in the Spring of 2014. The Board of Directors embraced and approved the project with great anticipation. The residents have shown much interest and support, furthering the belief that "a tree planted today is for the next generation!"

As we near completion of our 55th year of service in this location, we look forward to being a good neighbor in Franklin and Johnson County for the next 55 years!
